The Plot

The O'Hare Story

The episode begins with Paladin receiving a letter from a man named Matt O'Hare. Matt is a wealthy rancher who wants Paladin to teach his son, Tim, how to defend himself. Tim is a timid young man who has never fired a gun before, and Matt is concerned for his safety. Paladin agrees to take the job and travels to the O'Hare ranch.

When Paladin arrives, he meets Tim and begins training him in the use of a gun. However, Tim is so nervous and fearful that he can barely hold the weapon. Paladin soon discovers the reason for Tim's fear. Matt O'Hare is a cruel and abusive father who has been physically and emotionally abusing Tim for years.

Paladin confronts Matt about his behavior, but Matt refuses to change. In fact, he becomes even more violent towards Tim. Paladin realizes that he must do something to protect Tim from his father, but he knows that he can't simply shoot Matt. Instead, he comes up with a plan.

Paladin challenges Matt to a duel. Matt eagerly accepts, thinking that he can easily defeat the gunfighter. However, Paladin has a trick up his sleeve. He has secretly removed the bullets from Matt's gun, leaving him defenseless. When Matt draws his weapon, Paladin easily disarms him and forces him to sign over his ranch to Tim.
